The Gynecology and Obstetrics Service of the MútuaTerrassa University Hospital has recently participated in the 1st Smart China Expo (SCE 2018) with the aim of sharing its knowledge in the field of focused ultrasound technology HIFU (High Intensity Focused Ultrasound). In this sense, at the end of August he carried out the first live intercontinental retransmission of a treatment performed by means of this non-invasive therapeutic technique used in the field of gynecology for the approach of solid tumors through thermal ablation.

HIFU therapy is a widespread technique in China, Japan, Singapore and South Korea, but its development in Europe is not as widespread. The HIFU room of HUMT was the first in Spain - and the third in Europe - and the center has been working for more than 10 years to treat certain fibroids that, probably without HIFU, would have required surgery and with this technology it has been possible to reduce them. The HUMT has performed more than 800 treatments in the field of gynecology.

The procedure retransmitted from Chongqing consisted in the treatment of a uterine myoma that caused metorràgies and anemia to a patient with gestational desire. The intervention was a success: it developed without complications, lasted less than an hour and all the advantages associated with the technique were revealed.

In this sense, the procedure was demonstrated without the appearance of lesions in the surrounding tissues or scars that can hinder the gestational process or cause other problems, the fact of dispensing with general anesthesia and avoiding the introduction of devices or needles into the tissue and, in short, the fact of being a non-invasive therapeutic alternative that adds clear therapeutic benefits.

In parallel, the University Hospital Plaven Medical Saint Marina of Bulgaria also made an intercontinental live connection for the treatment of a fibroid with the same technology. Said SCE 2018 congress was attended by numerous large technology companies such as Alibaba, Qualcomm, Huawei or HAIFU® Chongqing that met with the will to present the latest developments in technology driven by Asian giant.
