The MútuaTerrassa Day of Hand Hygiene, which is in its 8th edition this year, aims to spread awareness about the importance of washing your hands

Backed by the slogan “Look at your hands: hand hygiene, the key for safe surgical care from admission to discharge”, the 8th edition of the annual Day of Hand Hygiene will be held on 13 May. It is organised and promoted by the HUMT Infections Committee in commemoration of the World Hand Hygiene Day launched by the WHO in 2009.

Once again this year, the event, which will start at 8:30am, is aimed at building awareness about the importance of hand hygiene in the prevention of infections when providing care. The presentation will be led by Dr. Carles Fontcuberta, CEO of MútuaTerrassa Healthcare Services Department, and Dr. Eric Herrero, consulting physician in the General Surgery Department and spokesperson for the company’s Infections Committee.

Next, Dr. Josep Maria Badía, chief of the Surgery Department at Granollers Hospital, will give a talk titled “Preventing infections in the surgery site: evidence beyond Semmelweiss”.

Within the context of this event, the company has also joined the campaign #SAFESURGICALHANDS promoted by the WHO. As such, on 5 of May (World Hand Hygiene Day), company professionals can participate by using a gadget to send their photos (of a hand, in line with the campaign theme). Gadgets will soon be available in various company entities.

Raising awareness is key

Over the course of the past few years, the company has taken a multidisciplinary approach to promoting numerous campaigns in order to educate, inform and get all MútuaTerrassa healthcare professionals involved in the importance of hand hygiene.

An example of this persistent multidisciplinary work is the creation of this event eight years ago. Another awareness raising action we will carry out is to distribute mouse pads with the slogan “Wash your hands” to all the company’s entities in order to emphasise the importance of permanent hand hygiene.

Furthermore, the week before the event (from 5 to 15 May), the campaign will also extend to the employee cafeteria. During this week, cafeteria trays will be lined with paper placemats that will also promote the importance of washing your hands in the healthcare sector.
