Therapeutic Education in Diabetes in Catalonia and the role of the nurse focuses the doctoral thesis of Dr. Maite Valverde

On Monday 10 July, the Jaume I University of Castellón de la Plana hosted the defense of the doctoral thesis "History and current situation of Therapeutic Education in Diabetes in Catalonia and the role of the nurse" Maite Valverde Torreguitart, who has been working as a nurse in the Endocrinology and Nutrition Service of the MútuaTerrassa University Hospital since 1991 (the year in which the first Diabetes, Endocrinology and Nutrition Unit was started).

This is a work co-directed by Dr. Pilar Isla Pera, Professor of the Department of Nursing and Public Health of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences of the University of Barcelona and Dr. Joanquim Moncho Vasallo, Department of Community Nursing, Preventive Medicine and Public Health of the Faculty of Health Sciences of the University of Alicante.


As for the content of the thesis, in a first phase analyzes the historical evolution that has had the implementation of therapeutic education programs in diabetes from the 1970s to the present. In this sense, Catalonia was a pioneer in initiating a change in the diabetes care model based on the training of professionals specifically in the field of therapeutic education and in enhancing the figure of the nurse as a leader in the development of educational programs within of the interdisciplinary diabetes care teams.


In a second phase, the thesis describes the current situation regarding training, work methodology and the role of nursing professionals in diabetes care teams, both in the area of ​​primary care as in the specialized one.


The court qualified the work with a Cum Laude and was formed by the president Dr. Concha Castillo Abad, chief of the Healthy Life Promotion Service of the Public Health Agency of the Generalitat, the secretary Dr. Loreto Maciá Soler, Department of Community Nursing, Preventive Medicine and Public Health of the Faculty of Health Sciences of the University of Alicante and the spokeswoman Dr. Margarida Jansà Morató, professor at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Barcelona.
